MAJOR INTERESTS
We are investigating the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease and also different forms of treatment and / or prevention such as therapeutic exercise. The relevance of this issue stems from epidemiological data that attribute to cardiovascular disease a leading cause of death and disability worldwide.
Specifically we aim at:
- Technology measures applications in vascular diseases, including BPAM variation and IMCT variation with BPAM changes
- General characterization of IMCT in Portuguese population
- Genetic platelet polymorphisms and thrombotic risk
- Genetic platelet polymorphisms and resistance to antiplatelet therapy
- Angiology and vascular surgery
- Exercise and cardiovascular diseases
- Endothelial progenitors stem cells, platelet cells and exercise

Project dEfENCE-CESPU-2016: Acute effects of exercise on circulating levels of endothelial progenitor cells in patients with coronary artery disease. | PI: João Paulo Venâncio | Team: João Paulo Venâncio, Maria do Céu Monteiro, Fernando Ribeiro, Suiane Cavalcante | Funding Entity: CESPU | Period covered: 04-2016 to 03-2017
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a dynamic and progressive pathological process of endothelial dysfunction and low-grade inflammation of the vascular wall. Endothelial Progenitor Cells (EPCs) are circulating endothelial precursor cells derived from bone marrow involved in angiogenesis and endothelial repair. Reduced number and functionality of the EPCs are associated with endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis, considered the underlying pathological profile of CAD. Physical exercise is able to mobilize EPCs into the bloodstream in healthy individuals; nonetheless in CAD patients the evidenced is scarce. We aim to determine the acute effect of PE in the mobilization of EPCs from bone marrow to circulation in patients with CAD, determining the mechanisms involved in this process. Thus, the circulating levels of EPCs and biomarkers potentially involve its mobilization will be determined before and after an exercise test maximal or limited by symptoms in 15 patients. This study will develop important clues to new measures of prevention and treatment involving the use of physical exercise in the CAD.
